Yokosuka City of Kanagawa Prefecture, Kure City of Hiroshima Prefecture, Sasebo City of Nagasaki Prefecture, and Maizuru City of Kyoto Prefecture have a common history of being developed as naval port cities because of the 'Chinju-fu (naval station)' set up in the Meiji era.

Many of the former military assets have been converted into public or private facilities after the Second World War. Rare monuments of the modernization period such as docks, large cranes, and erstwhile red brick warehouses are in evidence even now. Visit these four cities to experience the history of the modernization of Japan and enjoy the distinctive cuisine that grew out of naval culture.
